Sheffield Man Takes on 108-Mile Ultra Challenge to Raise Funds for Alzheimer’s Society
Scott Wolstenholme, 47, from Sheffield, is gearing up to tackle one of the UK’s toughest endurance events—the Montane Summer Spine Challenger South—to raise over £1,000 for Alzheimer’s Society.
Starting on Saturday 14th June, the non-stop, 108-mile ultramarathon follows the Pennine Way from Edale to Hardraw, cutting through dramatic landscapes including Kinder Plateau, Malham Cove, and Pen-y-Ghent. With only one official aid station at mile 47 and a 60-hour time limit, the event demands extreme physical and mental endurance.
Scott, who is Maintenance Manager for Airmaster based in Swallownest, is undertaking the race solo and self-supported, explained his motivation:
“I’ve seen first-hand the toll Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia take—not only on those living with the disease but also on their carer’s. Family friends, and colleagues have both been affected in recent years.
It’s great to know that through this challenge, I can help support people living with dementia today and contribute to the search for a cure.”
To complete the route, Scott will carry all his food, water, and mandatory safety equipment—tripling the weight of his pack. He’s training intensively over the next 5 weeks with the goal of finishing in under 40 hours, even if it means sleeping rough along the trail.
Jade Smith, Senior Running Events Fundraising Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, praised Scott’s efforts:
“It’s wonderful that Scott is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia devastates lives, but dementia won’t win.
Until the day we find a cure, we’ll be here to support anyone affected—wherever they are, whatever they’re going through. We need more people like Scott to unite with us against dementia.”
